New Tax on Privately Owned Aircraft in Italy
Dear Dr. Pepe,
I am a Private Pilot flying an aircraft Cessna 172 with a weight of 1100 kg. With the new Italian luxury tax in force I would have to pay 2750 Euro for a stay of more than 48 hours with my privately owned aircraft.
Although I love Italy and have absolutely enjoyed my previous stays with family and friends in your country, I am not willing to pay this completely excessive amount of money and will consequently have to avoid Italy as a travel destination.
Just to give you an idea what this means as a loss in financial terms for your economy I give you my estimate budget for my trip:
1) Stays in hotels for 4 persons and 4 nights with 120 € per night and person:1920 €
2) Expenses for food for 4 persons and 4 days with 50 € per day and person:800 €
3) Expenses for shopping, cultural events etc for 4 persons and 4 days with 100 €
per day and person: 1600 €
4) Expenses for aircraft fuel:600 €
5) Expenses for landing and other charges:200 €
TOTAL loss of revenues for the Italian Economy: 5120 €
I understand the need for any State to generate taxes to overcome the financial crisis. But with the new excessive luxury tax the Italian State will not generate any additional income, it´s just about to create a downturn of its Aviation and Tourism Industry. This can not be in your interest. I will not be the only private pilot having to avoid your country in the future. Please do rethink this tax and initiate negotiation talks with AOPA Italia, the Association representing General Aviation´s interest in your country.
Sincerely
